Periyar cattle gets indigenous breed status after 8-year efforts

Kerala’s indigenous Periyar cattle has received official breed recognition at the national level. The recognition followed more than eight years of field studies, scientific documentation and genetic evaluation, led by engineer-turned conservationist Cose Kurien. The breed, which once faced extinction threats, now gains formal recognition that could strengthen its conservation efforts.
