125-mn-yr old shellfish fossil shows maternal care in dinosaur era
Scientists discovered a 125-million-year-old fossil of freshwater shellfish 'Margaritifera valdensis' containing preserved embryos and larvae. Found on Isle of Wight, the fossil shows complex reproductive behaviour, including protecting and nourishing young inside gills, had evolved during Early Cretaceous period (dinosaur era). This is earliest known fossil evidence of maternal care in the group.
