2021 study had warned that Sikkim's South Lhonak lake may burst

Two years ago, an international research team issued a warning about South Lhonak Lake in Sikkim, stating that it may burst in the future, causing substantial downstream impacts. The study, published in 2021 in the journal Geomorphology, emphasised that the lake had grown significantly due to glacial retreat, raising the risk of glacial lake outburst floods (GLOF).
