Netherland's Marco van Basten scored a right-footed volley from a tight angle against the erstwhile USSR in the 1988 European Championship's final on June 25. He met a cross almost six metres from the right-hand goal line, before unleashing a top-spin volley which bundled just inside the far post. The Dutch won their maiden Euro title after their 2-0 win.
