30% corals died in catastrophic 2016 heatwave: Study

Corals on the Great Barrier Reef experienced a "catastrophic die-off" following the extended marine heatwave of 2016, an Australia-based study has found. The differently coloured corals depict the bleaching effect of global warming. Researchers found 30% of corals died due to bleaching along the 2,300-km World Heritage-listed reef off Australia's coast from March-November 2016.
