4.8-mn-yr-old freshwater fish fossils found in Shivalik foothills
Scientists have for the first time discovered freshwater fish fossils estimated to be around 4.8 million years old in the Shivalik foothills in UP's Saharanpur. This includes first fossil record of gourami in India and only the second known globally. The discovery indicates a complex freshwater ecosystem in the Himalayan region dating back to the Pliocene Epoch, the study said.
