42,000 waste pickers in India get 'climate champion' status

Over 42,000 informal waste pickers in India have been recognised as "climate champions" and environmental stewards under Project Utthaan, launched in 2020 with UNDP support. The "Planet Starts With People" campaign, launched on World Environment Day, placed these workers at the heart of India's circular economy efforts. It highlighted their crucial role in environmental sustainability.
