43 lakh tonne-pulses stock to act as shield: Govt on El Nino fears

The Consumer Affairs Secretary Nidhi Khare reacted to reports predicting El Nino this year, and said, "If there is an El Nino effect...buffer stock of pulses will be used." El Nino phenomenon weakens the South West monsoon in India, leading to below average rainfall and low crop yields. Notably, India possesses 43 lakh tonnes of pulses in stock.
