8,000 'controlled' earthquakes triggered under Swiss Alps

Researchers successfully triggered around 8,000 tiny earthquakes in a controlled setting far below the Swiss Alps. They filled a pre-selected fault with sensors and other instruments, and then sought to trigger movement, managing everything remotely. The goal of this experiment was to understand what happens at depth when the Earth moves and reduce risks, said one of the lead researchers.
