810 people die amid heatwave in Germany as temperatures cross 40°C

Germany recorded around 810 heat-linked excess deaths between April and late June 2026 as temperatures exceeded 40°C, as per a report by Robert Koch Institute. Maximum fatalities were recorded among those aged over 85 years. The deaths in most cases were from a combination of heat exposure and pre-existing medical conditions, while in some cases, heatstroke directly led to death.
