Africa could split apart sooner than previously thought: Study

A new study has found that the Turkana Rift Zone in eastern Africa may split from the continent sooner than previously thought. The rift, which spans 500 km across Kenya and Ethiopia, is a segment of the East African Rift System, where three tectonic plates meet. Researchers estimate the rift will take a few more million years to break away.
