Alikhan Smailov named Kazakhstan's new PM after violent protests
Alikhan Smailov was appointed as the new Prime Minister of Kazakhstan on Tuesday in a move by Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev after last week's violent protests in the country. Smailov had served as First Deputy Prime Minister in the previous Cabinet which Tokayev dismissed amid the protests. Security forces have detained nearly 10,000 people over the unrest.
