Amazon river was formed 9 million years ago: Study

Netherlands and Brazil-based researchers have determined the Amazon River was formed more than 9 million years ago. Chemical analyses of sediments from an exploration site in Brazil revealed changes in their composition around 9 million years ago. Researchers said that it represented a source shift from lowlands to Andes mountains, a diagnostic of the onset of the transcontinental Amazon River.
