American Airlines to issue bonds worth $5 bn to repay US govt debt

On Monday, American Airlines unveiled its plan to issue bonds worth $5 billion to pay back government loans that were passed in 2020 to help the airline industry survive the coronavirus pandemic. The airline also said it would seek a $2.5 billion loan backed by its frequent flyer programme that was valued between $19.5 billion and $31.5 billion last year.
