An airport on Ross Island in Antarctica has three ice runways. The runways at the McMurdo Station, which is the main base for the United States Antarctic Program, sit on 3 to 4 inches of compacted snow. Notably, only planes with ski-equipped landing gear are fit to land on the ice runways.
