Ancient city of Babylon declared UNESCO World Heritage Site

The UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) designated the ancient city of Babylon as a World Heritage Site. The designation recognises the civilisations of Mesopotamia and their contributions to humanity, the Iraqi government said. Babylon suffered damages during dictator Saddam Hussein's reign and when it was used as a military base during the US-led invasion of Iraq.
