US-based researchers have found that around 600-700 million years ago Earth's magnetic field varied in intensity, direction and originated from multiple poles instead of being bipolar. The study claims that the Earth's core went from solid to liquid state 1 billion years ago causing the magnetic field to become multipolar before eventually turning back to solid with bipolar magnetic field.
