Apple worked with US government on a secret iPod in 2005, revealed David Shayer, who was an Apple software engineer for 18 years. They wanted to add custom hardware to iPod and record data to iPod's disk in a way that couldn't be easily detected, he said. But it still had to look and work like normal iPod, Shayer added.
