Armed man takes Beirut bank staff hostage, demands his trapped savings

A Lebanese man armed with a shotgun has taken hostages at a Beirut bank and threatened to set himself on fire unless he receives his trapped savings to pay his father's medical bills. Soldiers and police converged on the area and sought a negotiation. Lebanon's cash-strapped banks since 2019 have put strict limits on withdrawals of foreign currency assets.
