Athletes used everyday wheelchairs weighing 15kg for racing at Paralympics

Wheelchair racing was introduced at the Paralympic Games in 1964. The athletes used to race with everyday wheelchairs that weighed a minimum of 15kg as specialised sports wheelchairs did not exist then. Sports wheelchairs arrived in the 1980s. Modern wheelchairs used in Para athletics weigh around 7kg, half the weight of those first used for racing.
