Bashar al-Assad sworn in as Syria's President for 4th term

Bashar al-Assad was sworn in as the President of Syria for the fourth term on Saturday after his landslide victory in May. Assad's opposition, the US and Europe had called the May presidential elections "illegitimate and a sham". Assad took over in 2000 after the death of his father Hafez al-Assad, who seized power in 1970 in a military coup.
