Big Tech urges US to let them make open-weight AI models freely as Kimi K3 rattles markets

Big Tech companies like Microsoft, Meta and OpenAI have urged the US government to allow the free development of open-weight AI models, or models that can be downloaded, inspected, modified and run by anyone. The firms said "premature restrictions" can "drive innovation overseas", referring to China's Kimi K3 models rattling markets. They said relying on closed models "isn't inherently safe".
