Can cracking joints be a warning sign of arthritis?

Dr Aruna S Malipeddi says painless joint clicks are common and do not indicate damage, but pain, swelling or stiffness may indicate arthritis. Morning stiffness lasting 30 minutes or more, often with swollen fingers, needs assessment. A hot, red, swollen joint with fever requires urgent care. Cracking knuckles has not been shown to cause arthritis.
