Canada & Denmark divide island, end 50-yr-long ownership dispute
Canada and Denmark have decided to divide a small, uninhabited island in the Arctic called the 'Hans Island', ending a 50-year-long ownership dispute between the countries. The island, with an area of 1.2 square kilometres, is equidistant from both Canada's Ellesmere Island and Denmark's Greenland. Both countries had laid claim to the island since 1971.
