Centre approves renaming Maharashtra's Ahmednagar as Ahilyanagar

The Union Home Ministry has given approval to change the name of Maharashtra's Ahmednagar district to Ahilyanagar. State Revenue Minister Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil welcomed the decision and called it a "historic event". Notably, in March 2024, the Maharashtra cabinet had proposed the renaming of the district after Punyashlok Ahilyabai Holkar, the 18th-century queen of the Maratha-Malwa kingdom.
