Centre empowers collectors in 8 states, UTs to grant citizenship

The Centre government on Wednesday empowered District Collectors in Gujarat, Rajasthan, Punjab, West Bengal, Assam, Tripura, Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh to grant Indian citizenship under the CAA. The district collectors can allow a person to be registered or naturalised after assessing that they are fit and proper. Empowered committees which previously held the power will now be replaced.
