Centre's fertiliser subsidy could top ₹3 trillion if West Asia crisis continues: Official

An official of Department of Fertilisers said the Centre’s fertiliser subsidy bill could surpass ₹3 trillion in the current financial year if the West Asia crisis continues. The official noted that India consumes around 70 million tonnes of fertilisers, most of it nitrogen-based. He suggested growing more pulses and indigenous crops like ragi, which require significantly less synthetic fertiliser.
