CERN unveils design of 100-km particle collider worth €24 billion

CERN has unveiled a concept design of a particle accelerator over three times bigger than the 27-km-long Large Hadron Collider (LHC), currently the world's largest. The 100-km Future Circular Collider (FCC) would generate accelerations equivalent to 10 million lightning strikes. Estimated to initially cost €9 billion, it is expected to start operations by 2040 and get upgrades worth €15 billion.
