China builds 582-tonne magnet for its 'artificial sun'
China has completed testing of a 582-tonne toroidal field magnet for its 'artificial sun' programme, the largest superconducting magnet ever built for a fusion reactor. Developed by the Chinese Academy of Sciences' Institute of Plasma Physics in Hefei, the D-shaped coil measures 21 metres by 12 metres. China aims to generate its first electricity from fusion by around 2030.
