China tests pencil-sized quantum magnetometer on subway

Chinese researchers from the University of Science and Technology of China successfully tested a handheld quantum magnetometer on a subway train. Originally designed for submarine detection, the pencil-sized device consumes just 5W and can filter Earth's background magnetic field. The study was published in Acta Physica Sinica on September 14. Future uses include geology, archaeology, and security.
