China transforms abandoned open-pit mine into urban 'green lung'
Chinese authorities have transformed the abandoned Haizhou open-pit coal mine in Liaoning province's Fuxin into an urban "green lung" through ecological backfilling and digital restoration. Once dubbed a "scar on the city", the mine now supports wildlife, including roe deer. The site was also designated as one of China's first 28 national mine parks, marking its ecological revival.
