China upholds death sentence for Canadian in drug smuggling case

A Chinese court has upheld the death sentence of Canadian citizen Robert Schellenberg for drug smuggling. Schellenberg was initially sentenced to 15 years in prison, but an appeal court in 2019 said this was too lenient, leading to a retrial and death sentence. Ties between the two countries have worsened since Huawei CFO Meng Wanzhou's arrest in Canada in 2018.
