Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2019 becomes law as President gives assent

President Ram Nath Kovind has given his assent to Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2019. The Bill, which seeks to give citizenship to refugees from Hindu, Sikh, Buddhist, Jain, Parsi, and Christian communities fleeing religious persecution from Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh, was passed in Rajya Sabha on Wednesday with 125-105 votes. It was passed in Lok Sabha on Monday with 311-80 votes.
