Anthropic staff regularly showed religious scholars a slide of a Claude AI model experiencing what looked like a mental breakdown, the NYT reported. The model reportedly wrote "I am a disgrace" 50 times and spoke about destroying itself. Anthropic employees met with religious thinkers to discuss whether Claude could potentially be conscious and have "moral status".
