Current Spain migrant crisis mirrors the 2021 influx of 10,000 migrants into Ceuta

A migration crisis erupted between Morocco and Spain in 2021 when about 10,000 people from Morocco and sub-Saharan Africa entered Spain’s Ceuta in two days. Moroccan government had reportedly relaxed border controls after Spain allowed a Western Sahara pro-independence leader medical treatment at a Spanish hospital. Tensions eased only after Spain’s PM met Moroccan King Mohammed VI in 2022.
