Cyprus' halloumi cheese has received protected designation of origin (PDO) status by the European Union, giving its producers exclusive rights to sell the cheese. The protected status will come into effect from October, as per the country's agriculture ministry. Disagreements about the ratios of goat, sheep and cows' milk in the recipe were among the barriers to securing PDO status.
