Darjeeling's 'Mountain Man' Gambir Singh receives Padma Shri in Literature & Education

Professor Dr Gambir Singh Yonzone, the 86-year-old botanist, educationist and environmentalist from West Bengal's hill town of Kalimpong, has been awarded the Padma Shri 2026 under the Literature and Education category. He is the first Indian Nepali (Gorkha) to earn an MSc and a PhD in Botany, PIB said. He is widely known as the 'Mountain Man'.
