Data centres face limited environmental scrutiny in India

At the India AI Summit, expansion of data centre capacity was highlighted, but environmental oversight remains limited. Adv Yashasvi Rathore said data centres are not explicitly covered under EIA Notification, 2006, meaning large facilities can be built without full impact assessment. She warned that gaps in regulation on energy, carbon & water use could lock in long-term environmental costs.
