Deeply regressive proposal: Shashi Tharoor on new Transgender Bill

Congress MP Shashi Tharoor called the Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Amendment Bill, 2026, a "deeply regressive proposal" which risks pushing India's transgender community back into "legal invisibility". "Equally troubling is the drastically narrowed definition of 'transgender person', which risks excluding trans-men, trans-women, non-binary, and gender-diverse persons," Tharoor said.
