Devasahayam becomes 1st Indian layman to be declared saint by the Pope
A Hindu man from Tamil Nadu, who converted to Christianity in 1745, became the first non-ordained Indian (a layman) to be declared a saint by Pope Francis at the Vatican on Sunday. Devasahayam Pillai, who took the name Lazarus, has been granted sainthood for "enduring increasing hardships" after embracing Christianity, the Vatican earlier said.
