El Niño could cause 451,000 heat deaths globally: Study

A new Climate Impact Lab study warns the developing 2026-27 El Niño could cause 451,000 additional heat-related deaths worldwide. Africa's Sahel region faces the heaviest toll with 66,800 deaths, followed by Indonesia (19,300), India (15,800), and Brazil (13,300). The current El Niño could become the strongest on record.
