El Niño index may hit record 3.7°C by December 2023: WMO
The Nino 3.4 climate index surged from 1.6°C in June to 2.5°C in August and could reach 3.7°C by December, potentially surpassing the 2015-16 record, World Meteorological Organization said. The peaking Indian Ocean Dipole adds further unpredictability, bringing wetter conditions to parts of Africa and Asia, while the western Pacific and equatorial Atlantic face drier spells.
