El Niño may peak in December, could last till February 2027: WMO

According to the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO), El Niño is expected to intensify in 2026 before peaking in December. WMO forecasts indicate a nearly 100% likelihood it will persist through February 2027, potentially making it one of the strongest since at least 1950. Central and eastern tropical Pacific temperatures could reach 3.7°C above normal during October-December, it said.
