Nutritionist Sonia Narang described emotional eating (and drinking/smoking) as a pure escape mechanism. She said that when cortisol spikes due to stress, the brain craves an immediate dopamine rush from sugar and fried foods. This creates a dangerous coping loop where people eat to hide from their emotions, leading to a permanent cycle of stress-eating, she added.
