Facebook was intercepting Snapchat's data to compete
In 2016, Facebook launched "Project Ghostbusters," aiming to intercept and decrypt Snapchat's traffic to understand user behavior and compete better. They used Onavo, a VPN-like service, to gather this data. After a 2019 investigation revealed that Facebook had been using Onavo to access user's web activity, the project was shut down. Facebook denies any wrongdoing.
