First human-made object made contact with another celestial body 67 years ago today
On September 13, 1959, the Soviet Union's Luna 2 became the first human-made object to make contact with another celestial body when it crashed into the Moon. Launched a day earlier, the spacecraft impacted between Mare Imbrium and Mare Serenitatis. Luna 2 carried scientific instruments and Soviet emblems and its mission found no detectable lunar magnetic field or radiation belts.
