The first generation iPod, a portable media player, belonging to the iPod Classic family was launched by Apple on October 23, 2001. Launched with the slogan '1,000 songs in your pocket', it had a 5 GB hard drive, a black and white LCD screen and was priced at $399. It had Mac-only compatibility and was discontinued on July 17, 2002.
