On 5th January 1971, England and Australia played out the first official ODI match. In the match played on the Melbourne Cricket Ground, Australia defeated England by five wickets after chasing a target of 191 runs. Despite the loss, then English cricketer John Edrich was awarded the man of the match for scoring 82 runs.
