Floodwaters rise above toes of China Giant Buddha statue for 1st time in 70 yrs
Record floods in China caused water from Yangtze River to rise over the toes of the nearly 233-foot-tall Leshan Giant Buddha statue for the first time in over 70 years, the state media reported. Staff, police and volunteers used sandbags to try to protect the statue, a UNESCO World Heritage site carved out of a rockface around 1,200 years ago.
