Frederik X to become Denmark King as Queen Margrethe II steps down after 52 years
Denmark's King Frederik X ascended the throne on Sunday, succeeding his mother Queen Margrethe II, who formally abdicated after 52 years as monarch. Margrethe, aged 83, is the first Danish monarch to voluntarily relinquish the throne in nearly 900 years since King Erik III Lam stepped down to enter a monastery in 1146.
